Google Gemini · Gemini app
Definition
Gemini is Google’s model family and consumer chat app. Citation behavior is not identical to AI Overviews even though both are Google. Overviews must use snippet-eligible indexed pages. The Gemini app may browse, mix training, or show fewer links depending on mode.
PR Daily’s citation series included Gemini next to ChatGPT and Claude when measuring journalism’s share of links. Copy those figures only with the study date.
How it works
Track the Gemini app as its own engine on the same prompt set. Record model name, whether browsing is on, and source URLs. Do not assume an Overview supporting link means Gemini will name you.
Worked example
Fifty prompts: Overviews include your methods page 9 times; Gemini app names the company 5 times and links you twice. Different surfaces. One slide should not say “Google AI: 9.”
How it differs
AI Overviews and AI Mode live in Search. Gemini is the branded model/app. GEO is the practice across them.
Common errors
Equating Gemini with Overviews. Using a Workspace-grounded chat with your own Drive as “public Gemini.”
