Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews · AIO · SGE successor

Definition

Google AI Overviews are generated summaries that sometimes appear above or among classic Search results. They synthesize sentences and show supporting links. Google’s Search Central documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet before it can be used as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. There are no extra technical hoops beyond that. Appearance is not guaranteed even when those conditions are met. Overviews also do not fire on every query.

The older lab name was Search Generative Experience (SGE). Do not write SGE into a 2026 measurement plan unless you are citing history. AI Mode is a related conversational Search surface. Google notes that the two can use different models and show different links.

How it works

Get the page into the index with a snippet allowed. Do not set nosnippet or max-snippet: 0 if you want the text available as input; Google’s snippet rules also affect these surfaces. Write an extractable answer with visible facts. Earn independent pages that repeat the same entity facts. Then measure impressions and link presence in the Overview, separately from classic blue-link rank.

Example: a query “how to contest a parking ticket in Chicago” shows an Overview with four supporting links: the city site, a legal-aid explainer, a newspaper how-to, and a parking-app blog. The app blog is owned media. The newspaper how-to is earned coverage of a local clinic, not of the app. If the app team reports “we are in the Overview,” they should say as which link. If they are absent and the newspaper is present, the digital PR target is the clinic story plus a better owned explainer, not a prompt-engineering retainer.

How it differs

A featured snippet is usually one boxed extract from one page. An Overview is a generated blend. A ChatGPT answer lives outside Google Search and cites by a different retriever. Paid ads can appear near these surfaces under Google’s ad rules; that is paid media next to a generated box, not an earned citation.

Common errors

Treating Overview presence as a rank-1 equivalent. Blocking snippets and wondering why the page is never a supporting link. Using one logged-in screenshot as a tracking panel. Calling every generated box “SGE.”
