Definition

Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational Search surface, related to but not the same as AI Overviews. Google’s documentation says the two may use different models and show different supporting links. Eligibility for a supporting link is the same gate: indexed and snippet-eligible. No extra technical form.

Measure AI Mode separately from classic results and from Overviews. A page can appear in one and not the others.

How it works

Keep pages indexed, snippet-allowed, and written as extractable answers. Earn corroborating coverage. Then sample AI Mode prompts on a fixed list, logged-out if possible.

Worked example

A query shows an Overview with four links and, in AI Mode, a longer chat with two of those links plus a docs page. Your newsroom is in Mode, not in the Overview. That is a real split, not a tracking bug.

How it differs

AI Overviews are the SERP box. ChatGPT is outside Google. AI Mode is Google’s chat-like Search. Ads can appear near these surfaces under Google’s ad rules — paid, not earned.

Common errors

Treating Mode screenshots from a logged-in staffer as a panel. Blocking snippets. Calling it SGE.
