Measurement
Referral traffic
earned referral · press traffic
Definition
Referral traffic is visits that arrive from a hyperlink on another site — the analytics version of a backlink that someone clicked. Digital PR can move it. Many of the most useful links never will: nofollow newspapers, lazy readers, and AI answers that do not send a click.
Measure it. Do not make it the only score, or you will pitch clickbait and skip the high-authority URL that sends twelve sessions and a hundred ranking points.
How it works
Use UTM only when the publisher will accept it; most newsrooms will not. Rely on referrer in analytics. Exclude your own domains and the wire. Compare landing pages: methods vs homepage.
Worked example
A feature in a developer outlet sends 1,400 sessions in 48 hours, 4% sign up. A DA 90 newspaper link sends 90 sessions and later shows up in AI Overviews. Both rows belong in the report.
How it differs
A backlink is the href, clicked or not. Branded search is people looking for you after. Impressions are not visits.
Common errors
Tagging news links with sales UTMs that editors strip. Calling all social “referral.” Ignoring the landing-page 404.
