Media advisory

media alert

Definition

Media advisory is a short notice of an event: what, who, when, where, and why a desk might send someone. It is not the story. The story is what happens at the event, or the release that follows.

Keep it to one page. Put the embargo or the open time in the first line. Include parking, livestream, and the name of the person with a badge list.

How it works

Send to assignment desks that actually staff that kind of event. Follow with the release when the event produces news. Do not paste 1,200 words of boilerplate into an advisory.

Worked example

“Lockup lift 10:00 a.m. ET, Room 4, CFO and auditor available for 15 minutes, livestream URL.” That is an advisory. The earnings release is a separate document at 10:00.

How it differs

A press release announces news. A media kit holds assets. An advisory invites coverage of a happening. A holding statement is for crises, not ribbon-cuttings.

Common errors

Calling a product launch email an advisory. Forgetting timezone. Embargoing an event that is already on a public calendar.
