Analyst relations
AR · industry analyst relations
Definition
Analyst relations is the practice of briefing research firms (Gartner, Forrester, IDC, niche shops) so their notes, magic quadrants, and inquiries mention you accurately. Buyers use those notes in vendor shortlists. The earned object is the independent note. A paid reprint of a reprint is paid.
AR is slower than digital PR and more confidential. Briefings are often under firm-specific rules. Do not pitch an embargoed Gartner draft to a reporter.
How it works
Map the analysts who already cover the category. Offer customer references and a crisp architecture diagram. Respond to inquiries on their clock. Measure: mentions in published research, inquiry volume, shortlist inclusion — not AVE.
Worked example
A mid-market SIEM vendor does four briefings in a year, lands a Niche Player dot, and two inquiry-driven RFP invites. A splashy TechCrunch hit the same year did not move those RFPs. Different audiences.
How it differs
Media relations talks to journalists. Award submissions talk to award juries. AR talks to research firms. Thought leadership may feed all three.
Common errors
Briefing an analyst with the same deck you send interns. Leaking a confidential quadrant. Buying a reprint and calling it a ranking you “earned” without the paid label.
